The documentary project was initially ignited by the song, instrumental in assisting Cesar Chavez and the movement known as “LA CAUSA”. Written by Abel Sanchez and Jorge Santana (brother to Carlos Santana).
The inspiration for committing to take on the work to create this documentary was as a result of Abel's life long dear friend, Maya Angelou asking him to promise he would do so. After viewing the initial six minute pilot piece, Ms Angelou told Abel that he needed to pursue the suggestion others had offered that he do a complete documentary. There was no way he was going to deny fulfilling his promise to Maya. The respect and admiration for this wonderful lady became the impetus for the journey. Subsequently Abel and his partner Andres Alegria embarked upon creating a full documentary.
Listen to this interview clip with Maya and you will hear the heart of why this documentary Song For Cesar became a passion for the producers and all those who have joined us along the way. It is, and always was, ultimately dedicated to Cesar Chavez, his legacy, the United Farm Workers Union, and most of all the Farm Workers, their families, and all people who may benefit from the messages contained in this film.
